Jon Geers - 05/30/2023 One of these was my first "real" piece of stereo equipment, purchased when I was 17 to replace the KMart/Capehart all-in-one that I'd purchased three years earlier with 8th grade graduation $.
Six years later I was moving, exchanging one roommate for two others. The old roommate needed stuff, I had stuff I wouldn't need, he had $, and I needed $. He's still a friend; he used my first microwave oven, color TV, and vacuum cleaner for years and I think he still has my first ironing board. We live cross-country from each other now but I visited him a few days ago. To my amazement, he presented me with the ol' 221 - I had not seen it in years. I brought it home, hooked it up to some 70s Zenith "circle of sound" speakers that another friend had given me, stuck a short bare wire into the FM antenna connector, and turned it on. Other than all the dial lights being burned out the little guy still tunes in the stations nicely and pumps out the tunes. The volume control isn't scratchy at all; the balance is, a little bit. I'm amazed in multiple ways and now I have to find just the right use for it. |
Milan Bogovac - 08/19/2021 I totally agree with Michael Vienneau review. I also have 221 and mine has gone completely refreshing and recapping. Sound is sweet, enjoyable, dynamic, warm and detailed.
Yes, it has 2x8w or 2x10w, but don't be fooled by that. When I was teenager I thrown a lot of parties with this receiver. It was so loud that we couldn't speak. Back then I didn't know that its so "weak" amp.
Just have to say one more thing. Until I did recapp my main unit was recapped Sansui Au517. After 221 came home with hard feelings I had to admit that 221 is going to replace Au517. That's how good sound of 221 is.
If you ever get one, just grab it. |
Michael Vienneau - 07/10/2014 I own a Sansui 221 receiver, i got it off my neighbor as he was putting it out by the curb to throw away. I took it home and hooked it up the sound was incredible, especially with the loudness button on. I have a newer Yamaha 5.1 dolby digital receiver and when playing just 2 channel stereo that old Sansui puts my Yamaha to shame. It is an awesome piece of vintage electronic history and i glad that i am fortunate enough to own one |
