Sony STR-V4 L

by Kelly Green Date Added: Thursday 01 May, 2014
I upgraded to this model after many years of using modern black-faced components. The first thing you will notice is the vastly improved richness and clarity this gem has to offer. Old classic songs become new again as you hear instruments and sounds you never heard before. Now I'm hearing singers inhale and lick their lips, the lite rasping sounds of their fingers sliding from one cord to the next. Then the amazing warmth of the sound envelopes you like an old down comforter. The music feels warm-blooded as it crackles with new life. My non-audiophile friends just like that it rattles the windows throughout the house. Sadly, they don't even appreciate the fact that your feet feel it's crisp punchy bass in the floor even at very-very low volume. I find the radio reception a bit weak but I don't give a flying fart. I'll pick up a good antenna for it one of these days. If you get your hands on one of these, be sure to get one of the matching Sony ferrite cassette decks to complete the stack. They are legendary.
They sound as good as a CD, and make my vintage Pioneer deck sound like a Fisher Price record player.
These old Sonys are the ever-underestimated sleepers of vintage audio. They can really knock some of those Pioneer and Marantz snobs down a peg or two, and do it at half the price. (for now)
