The Golden Rule in HIFI is N-E-V-E-R buy a music component by its statistics, buy it based upon how it sounds. There is, of course, an exception to to the rule and that is Tuners. You don't buy tuners for how they sound; you buy tuners for how they perform. Before I start this review, let's get something perfectly clear, there is no such thing as a HIFI Tuner because radio FM/Am reception is not considered Hi Fidelity. You buy a tuner to listen to NPR, Howard Stern or Rush Limbaugh. You can hear music on a tuner but it won't be high fidelity.
With that said, you see a used Yami T1000, buy it before someone else does!!! What to look for: Signal to noise ratio ( higher the better) the Yami is 85 DB. Quieting sensitivity (Lower the better) the Yami is 50DB Capture Ratio (lower the better) with 1DB excellent. Alt Channel Selectively (higher the better) the Yami is 85/30 DB. disregard Useable sensitivity because it is Junk Science!!!
You also buy tuners for their features. When I bought my Yami 1000 25 years ago, I was deep into taping radio programs (80s College Radio). My Yami 1. Had a Rec Cal button for test tones, a signal meter, 2. a multi path distortion button/meter to show station interference 3. AAuto/Manual button 4. FM indicator meter 4. Manual tuning by tenths 5. Ten STN presets with a hokey STN cut out sheet which everyone has lost over time. I love my Yami as it is great pulling in distant stations.
Finally, a tuner is only as good as the antenna that it uses. If you can't use a good Outdoor Antenna, or hook into a 75 Ohm cable, pop for an indoor powered antenna. A good Tuner is ageless and this Yami is as good as it gets. Be forewarned tuners are a STONEAGE technology as everything you need is on Internet radio. Still, for a 25 year old technology, the Yamaha T1000 is worth searching for.
