One of these was my first "real" piece of stereo equipment, purchased when I was 17 to replace the KMart/Capehart all-in-one that I'd purchased three years earlier with 8th grade graduation $.
Six years later I was moving, exchanging one roommate for two others. The old roommate needed stuff, I had stuff I wouldn't need, he had $, and I needed $. He's still a friend; he used my first microwave oven, color TV, and vacuum cleaner for years and I think he still has my first ironing board. We live cross-country from each other now but I visited him a few days ago. To my amazement, he presented me with the ol' 221 - I had not seen it in years. I brought it home, hooked it up to some 70s Zenith "circle of sound" speakers that another friend had given me, stuck a short bare wire into the FM antenna connector, and turned it on. Other than all the dial lights being burned out the little guy still tunes in the stations nicely and pumps out the tunes. The volume control isn't scratchy at all; the balance is, a little bit. I'm amazed in multiple ways and now I have to find just the right use for it.
